Maya Tsekenis currently works for the New York City Department of Education as a school social worker. She is certified bilingual in Spanish by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). In addition, Ms. Tsekenis is enrolled in the Master’s Degree Program in Educational Leadership at Brooklyn College. This program prepares instructional leaders who can successfully work in alternative settings as well as traditional schools. Graduates are prepared to work with staff and students of every background and to educate children of differing academic abilities and learning needs so that they can reach and exceed ambitious State and City standards. As part of the program, Ms. Tsekenis is working as an intern supervising classroom instruction, organizing professional development for teachers and learning about the financial responsibilities required to run a school successfully. The program will allow her to become simultaneously eligible for the New York State School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) Certification.

In her daytime position, Ms. Tsekenis conducts the initial social history assessment with parents for children and adolescents who may require academic support and/or related services. After a thorough review of the evaluations and assessments, an appropriate program recommendation is made.

As a school social worker, Ms. Tsekenis is not only part of an evaluation team, but an advocate for the children and families with whom she works. She considers herself a vital source of information for families in need of additional support and an essential resource for referrals in the community.
