Maya Tsekenis currently works for the New York City Department of Education as a school social worker. She is certified bilingual in Spanish by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), however, she is fluent in Greek as well. Ms Tsekenis is currently employed by the Committee on Special Education District Office, Region 7, for Districts 20 & 21 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. There, she is an integral part of the evaluation team consisting of a school psychologist, school social worker and IEP teacher.
Ms. Tsekenis conducts the initial psycho-social intake assessment (or social history) with parents for children/adolescents who may or may not require additional academic support and/or related services. Academic support includes a smaller, or more restrictive, class environment. Related services may include speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and counseling, among others.
As a school social worker, Ms. Tsekenis is not only part of an evaluation team, but, an advocate for the children and families with whom she works. She considers herself a vital source of information for families in need of additional support and an essential resource for referrals in the community.
The Committee on Special Education Office (CSE) is located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The office services private and parochial schools, including yeshivas, in Brooklyn.
